The first week with The Man

It's nearing the end of the first week of my new employment.

Having only met in person one employee throughout the interview process – the rest being carried out over the phone or via video conference – I was a little apprehensive as to how the environment would be. It turns out I've had nothing to worry about. The group of people are chatty, friendly, and – most importantly for someone who's traditionally worked in isolation from various head offices – inclusive. We all stop for lunch (company sponsored) to chat for 30-40 minutes, and there's regular banter going on all through the day.

Study wise, they're being fully supportive of my academic needs and have already booked me on a the first of (at least) three training courses, starting on Monday. In addition they're funding the (really damn expensive!) reading materials so I can study in parallel for another set of exams which will enable them to migrate the risk management regulatory roles from the MD to myself.

All in, so far, no complaints or concerns. I'm seeing many areas I can already add value, and many more areas I can take an interest in and will be able to add value in the future. As is the case in any new role, the key is to not take on too much to begin with, ensure you're well grounded and knowledgeable, and then expand your interests and influence.

I'm looking forward to an exciting 2012 with the company.
